Everyone needs a social support system to live a health and fulfilled life. we all need someone to laugh, cry and share our life with. Friends and family therefore form the biggest part of that system. Because psychosis affects not only the ill person's life but everyone around them as well, it is therefore important for friends and family to be involved in the treatment process. From birth, a person's family play a crucial role as both an aid or an obstacle to a person's recovery.The family should be made aware of the importance their role is to the recovery path of their loved one.
Love and care should not be withdrawal to a loved one based on their illness. It is at this very crucial point in their life that persons with psychosis need the love and care from their family and friends. Psychosis can be a very frightening experience and one is and can never be prepared for a psychotic episode, hence they would need all the support they can get. It is at this point also when everything else isn't making any sense and they may feel that something isn't quite right with them, offering your support and reassurance will make all the difference on their path to recovery. Young people with psychosis may be at risk of committing suicide. Supporting them through this journey from illness to recovery, giving them hope and reassurance maybe just the thing that restrains them from taking their life.
Your wellbeing as a care giver should also not be overlooked. take sometime for yourself and have some fun. you will be more useful to your ill loved one when your healthy and at your best. by being at your best we mean, being physically, mentally, socially and spiritually healthy. this will ensure that your give your all to that loved one who is on his or her path to recovery.
